May tells Estlin that he was much gratified to hear that Estlin met and liked William Lloyd Garrison. He gives a long account of the case of Joseph, a slave who stowed away to Boston on the brig, Ottoman, from New Orleans and the subsequent public meeting at Faneuil Hall led by John Quincy Adams concerning the slave's recapture. May asks Estlin if certain prominent men might be persuaded to join the Anti-Slavery League. He discusses Frederick Douglass' relations with the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society and praises an article written by William Hincks. May speaks of James Haughton, Richard Davis Webb, Elihu Burritt, and others; of Douglass' allusion to Unitarian practice in regard to communion; and the Evangelical Alliance. May clarifies his reasons for leaving his church in Leicester
